Sadly, I already fell into the loop of “I have to find the book that will teach me everything I want to know” so I’m gonna keep looking, but I would appreciate the recommendations anyways
Have you tried Oxford’s *A Very Short Introduction* series? I’ve found that they’re perfect when you want to learn basically everything in a way that is both scholarly and approachable. They cover hundreds of topics from so many different humanities & STEM fields written by professional academics and they do have a book on Cells, another on Microbiology and another on Biology.

[The Machinery of Life](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6601267-the-machinery-of-life) is a good introduction to biology. It has great illustrations.
And now for the out of left-field response:
Parasite Eve — Hideaki Sena
*The Song of the Cell* by Siddhartha Mukherjee
