i just bought black myth: wukong and am really interested in the mythology. i heard the book is incredibly long. how would you describe it? funny? whimsical? action packed? slow burn? now there is also an abridged version called monkey i think. who all has read this book and do you enjoy it? what did you like about the book and what did you NOT like? i mean 2300 pages seems a little crazy, but if it’s an epic journey i would like reading it. i am a fan of big odysseys and adventures with many characters and interesting lore.

Its a great book, but there’s a satire bit of journey to the west that you may not catch without knowing a bit about the Ming dynasty, in particular the Jia Jing period.
The Jia Jing emperor was infamous for neglecting court affairs to pursue his dreams of attaining immortality through taoist practices. JTTW does mock this period which was why it was banned during the Ming dynasty.
Nonetheless I dont think it will affect your reading much – it certainly didnt affect me on my first reading as well!
You can get it for free online. Just start reading and see if you like it.
