Why did Ansel think he starved to death on the farm? Why did no one correct him?

It’s like he returned from the dead and nobody questioned it

Apparently this sub reddit has a minimum character limit so my thoughts on the book were that it was quite interesting but I found some parts quite incomplete. They touched on Ansel’s motives but didn’t hash it out, and didn’t really explain a lot of his self destructive actions. I think the men in the book in general were quite 2D. The book also was quite insistent that Ellis died and I felt misled that he was suddenly alive and the cause wasn’t explored as a significant part of the plot. Anyway, the story and format was great, loved the non-linear storytelling. Hopefully this meets the subreddit length requirement
