First of all that’s not true. The default setting ISN’T a white character. It’s only because people read english books. If you read, say, an Indonesian book, of course the character will be Indonesian. Same for Chinese books, Arabic books, Hindu books, you name it.
In Indonesian speaking countries, most people are Indonesian. In english speaking countries, most people are white. It would be natural to assume a character speaking english to be white, a character speaking Chinese to be Chinese. It’s not due to racism or discrimination. It just is. So why do people complain about that?

Why can’t be just be tired of white protagonists? Its overplayed
Only 60% of the US is white, and it’s a quickly shrinking number. But 40% of protagonists are hardly people of color, mostly because book deals and marketing dollars are placed with people who look most like the acquisition editors, who are overwhelmingly white. It’s fine for people to be tired of reading whatever they’re tired of reading. What’s it your business for? Just scroll past.
