    Hello all!

I'm looking for book recommendations to read with my son 7 and daughter 5. I'd like early chapter books, between around Dragon Masters at the easier side and Emily Windsnap (no picture, chapter book version) at the advanced side.

I would love to find some generally lighthearted books, that do not have really deep struggles. And books that hopefully have a male main character, or not-only/ not-mainly girls.

We've read some I Survived books although we like those, I want to balance it out with something more lighthearted at bedtime before sleeping.

Also, we just started the Emily Windsnap books. We've read a few of the picture-chapter books together and my daughter loved those. My kids seem to like the more detailed no-picture chapter books so far. And I'd love something with a similar feel that is not so targeted to girls that my son can relate to more as well.

I love fantasy. And my son liked Dragon Masters. He also loves nonfiction and historical fiction so those are good genres too!

Thank you so much for all your help!

    1. Magic Treehouse? I can’t remember if they are illustrated or not but it’s a series about a brother-sister pair who can time travel with their treehouse.

    2. They may be old school, but Gordon Korman’s books I Want to Go Home and No Coins Please still crack me up. My husband loved the Soup books (historical fiction) and Encyclopedia Brown as a kid, and I was partial to The Great Brain. The best part about reading books from the 70s-90s Apple series are they are cheap!

    3. The movie series How to Train Your Dragon is actually based on a book series by Cressida Cowell. The books have a completely different plot than the movies but are still fantastic. I read them when I was 7 or 8. They are definitely a lot denser than dragon masters but very fun
