Now that I've soured on John Banville, I've realized that the only living novelist I've read and care for is Mircea Cartarescu [edit: I forgot that Handke is alive…] – but I've read most all the Cartarescu that's there to read in English, and don't really plan on learning Romanian anytime soon.
I'm looking preferably for living authors who write in English, and who are "like Cartarescu," which means that they should (a) have a maximalist prose style, (b) write explicitly surrealist, experimental, philosophically informed literary fiction broadly centered on and responding to urban or societal decay, and (c) write full-length novels, 300+ pages but the longer the better.
