Recently read Amy Tan’s fantastic novel about Chinese courtesan culture in the early 1900’s called The Valley of Amazement and I was struck that I was completely unaware of such a significant part of East Asian culture from such a recent time period.

I also finished Yellowface by RF Kuang, and a big plot point of that book is about the Chinese Labor Corps in WWI. It got me thinking about how much world history I have missed and how I’d learn more.

I’m looking for any fiction book that deals with historical events that aren’t generally taught in schools (preferably from somewhere outside US history). Thanks in advance!

Iris Chang’s books might interest you, but do not take trigger warnings lightly.
