I just finished The Mandarins by Simone de Beauvoir and found the story of how the peace after World War II impacted the lives and tested the ideals of French intellectuals so compelling.
I would love to read more fiction books that start immediately after wars and describe the experiences of people affected directly or indirectly by them. I’d prefer novels about wars that actually happened rather than sci-fi, fantasy, etc., but it doesn’t matter to me what time period the book is set in or when it was written.
