Suggest a book based on my favourites (as someone who hasn’t read many books)

I recently got into reading, and I enjoyed The Hobbit, Portnoy's Complaint, and Crime and Punishment the most. I also liked Kafka's Metamorphosis a lot, and also Gogol's short stories like The Nose. But yeah, I needed a while to finish Crime and Punishment, I don't think I'm ready yet for books that are longer than that.

Also, this is a bit hard to explain, but I basically never understand poetry or what it's trying to say, and so I dislike books with poetry-like language.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
