I've just started a new job teaching English in a middle school, and I have a bizarrely large number of students who love Agatha Christie. I'm looking for recommendations for similar books that are suitable for 12-14 year olds.

The appeal of Agatha Christie's books seem to be that the students like historical fiction, murder mysteries and her style of writing. Some of them also seem to like the glamorous/upper class setting. They also enjoy the fact that these are grown-up books, not aimed at children/young teens.

I have no idea what to suggest, this isn't the kind of thing I read at all, so please let me know if you have any recommendations. I have to be cautious, since I'm the teacher – I can't recommend anything that a parent might judge inappropriate, so please don't suggest anything with sex/swearing/drugs/graphic gore or violence. Thank you!

Do look into The Complete Adventure of Feluda Parts: 1 and 2 by Satyajit Ray (This is exactly what you’re looking for)

And possibly The Adventures of Arsene Lupin by Maurice LeBlanc

And the evergreen Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Not sure if this is appropriate for your situation, but I really love the **Parker and Pentacost** mystery series. It’s basically a reboot of the Sherlock/Watson mystery duo, but instead of two men in Victorian London, it’s two women in 1940s NYC. Pentacost is a brilliant but aloof (and socially kind of awkward) private detective who only works alone. Parker is a young lesbian woman who is also a runaway circus performer. When Pentacost is diagnosed with MS, she realizes she must hire an assistant to be able to follow leads quickly. One night, she’s almost mugged in a parking lot when she’s saved by Parker’s excellent knife-throwing skills. And thus, a beautiful and pretty fun partnership is born.

Edit – first book of the series is called **Fortune Favors the Dead**.

It’s been years since I’ve read them, but I loved the Sally Lockhart books by Phillip Pullman when I was about that age.
