So I’m one of those people who checks the “Does the Dog Die?” website before watching stuff because I’m just such a sap when it comes to animals being hurt or dying in movies. I’m the same way with books; I still remember crying through *Where the Red Fern Grows* as a kid. Can’t help it, it’s just now I am.

I keep seeing posts about how amazing *Lonesome Dove* is but am hesitant to start it if there’s a lot of animal suffering.

For those of you who have read it – whether you liked the book or not and please, without going into specifics/details, would you recommend I give it a try?

    1. Lonesome Dove is not much concerned with animals, though much of it occurs in the context of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana. I only remember people dying. I wholeheartedly recommend it. Superbly written, enthralling, engaging characters. Read it. McMurtry is a superb writer.

There is one part where a bull gets mauled by a bear and it’s pretty graphic, but it’s only a couple pages out of like 800.

Incredible book though, honestly one of the greatest works of narrative fiction of the 20th century.
