There seem to be lots of books about deep sea exploration. Some of those focus on the archaeology of shipwrecks, which is super interesting, but they always allude to the fact that illegal scavengers and poachers could/do make it to shipwrecks before archaeologists or scientists. It always leaves me with some questions: how common are shipwreck scavengers? Are they all divers and explorers themselves? How do they operate, and with what kind of secrecy? What do they prefer to take? Where do they sell their salvage, and who buys it? How do authorities even keep up with them?
