Autobiographical features would be a welcome bonus. I thoroughly enjoyed *The Tongue Set Free* by Elias Canetti, *Souvenirs d’enfance* by Marcel Pagnol or *Death of Beautiful Roebucks* by Ota Pavel. They all brandish a vivid and poetic style – deaths and war happen and have impact but never become the focus (the focus is on people, not events), even if they are the driving force of change in their lives.

oooooh you NEED to read Annie Erneaux! she’s exactly what you’re looking for, but start with The Years and A Frozen Woman
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
I really like Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner.
You might like Needle in a haystack, by casey jordan if you like emotional Rollercoasters and a bit of paranormal. Non fiction
