Started reading for joy as a hobby a little under a year ago, and realized I’ve only really read one genre of fiction, fantasy. I want to explore other genres to see if something else may fit my taste a bit more (though I do absolutely love fantasy, shout out Neil Gaiman).
What are some quick, easy, and good reads across the sub-genres of fiction for a newer reader to go through to feel out other genres?

For military science fiction, my go-to is *All You Need is Kill* by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
For cyberpunk, *Hana Hsu and the Ghost Crab Nation* by Sylvia Liu might work.
For LGBTQIA+ slice-of-life, *Camp QUILTBAG* by Nicole Melleby and A. J. Sass.
For zombie horror, *World War Z* by Max Brooks.
For theoretical hard science fiction, *Rocket Girls* by Housuke Nojiri.
Island in the Sea of Time, Warrior’s Apprentice by Bujold, The Physician by Noah Gordon, Shogun and King Rat by Clavell, Remnant Population, the Dosadi Experiment, The Blessing Way by Hillerman, Beat to Quarters by C S Forrester, the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Up the Down Staircase, All Creatures Great and Small, A mystery by Louise Penny
