I'm looking for something depressing, heartbreaking, absolutely soul-crushing. Bonus points if it's cute at times as well. I don't want a sad ending necessarily, I'm impartial about the mood it ends in. I'd actually rather you don't mention anything about the ending at all.
I'm not sure about the genre. Anything goes, I guess, except for sci-fi. The relationship can be straight, queer, whatever.
Thanks in advance!

Affinity by Sarah Waters — Victorian era historical fiction. An upperclass woman tries to help an imprisoned spiritualist, who she falls in love with. The bleakest romance I’ve ever read. If you like it, you could also try Fingersmith by the same author, which is almost, but not quite, as grim.
