Character driven multi-decade spanning stories

I'm learning I really enjoy character driven books which span large swathes of their lives. I loved a little life (sorry), and a place for us by fatima mirza. I recently saw the show fellow travelers and fell in love with that as well. Any sort of book that really explores characters and gives me a sense of their lives would be really appreciated. These tend to be sad usually, but that's not a requirement. Bonus points if there's some sort of romance in there. Thank you!
