* The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. Very short, and one inspiration for The Handmaid’s Tale
* Red Rising by Pierce Brown. A bit like The Hunger Games, but in space.
* The Stars Now Unclaimed by Drew Williams. Fun action-y sci fi.
* The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (first in a series, but the books can be read out of order if a different one sounds more appealing). Fun sci fi with a lot of creative concepts.
* Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. I found this book completely riveting and powered through it in a few days.
* Grass by Sheri S. Tepper. Dystopian sci fi.
