Hello! My 1st grade daughter has gotten super into graphic novels — she loves Rollergirls & Mr. Wolf’s Class in particular. What seems to excite her are school situations, friendship stuff, arguments with parents, etc. So everybody always suggests Raina Telgemeier’s Smile, Guts, etc — but those are a \*teeny\* bit too old, full of plotlines about crushes and dating and pimples and etc. So, basically I’m looking for some graphic novels that are right in the Ramona Quimby sweet spot — authentic to kids’ complicated lives and feelings but not yet preoccupied with romance. Thanks!

They’re not graphic novels, but she might enjoy Calvin and Hobbes.

Edited to add the Amelia books by Marissa Moss. They also aren’t graphic novels, but they’re written in the format of a kid’s hand-written diary with illustrations she has drawn on every page. Kind of hard to describe, but you can look at samples on Amazon. I thought these were so fun when I was around that age.

    3. have you checked the graphic novel section at your local library even online they tend to separate by age group. [https://www.mrsdalloways.com/graphic-novels-beginning-readers](https://www.mrsdalloways.com/graphic-novels-beginning-readers) [https://childhood101.com/best-graphic-novels-early-readers/](https://childhood101.com/best-graphic-novels-early-readers/) I personally liked the magic tree house books which were alittle more advanced when i was that age but i was a advanced reader but they are now a graphic novel set. If she loves animals please introduct the Animal Ark books when she gets to be that age they are great and there is one for every letter of the alphabet and they will basically make the kid want to be a vet. Not all of us followed through though.
