I’m particularly interested in early history/archeology; trying to figure out the origins of religions and cultures. E.g. what do we actually know about Jerusalem during David’s dynasty? I’m NOT interested in religious or anti-religious propaganda, just what archeologists and historians have found out, debates and controversies etc. Any titles to suggest?

It’s been years since I read it, but I think One City, Three Faiths by Karen Armstrong touches on some of the archaeological and geological factors that influenced Jerusalem. But it’s also a long history that I want to say starts in pre-history and gets up to the 20th century so you’ll want to vet it carefully to see if it really looks at your question.
