Fiction books about Gods/Goddesses of India?

I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for books akin to Journey to the West, or maybe Niel Gaiman’s Norse Mythology but involving India and it’s folklore?

I’ve always been intrigued by Hindu mythology and the folklore of India, and I find it really fun to read about cultures when it’s mixed in with fiction, or at least ones that have a storyline to follow – instead of just reading a droll documentary.

I mean no offence in referring to these as “fiction”, but would English translations of Mahabharata and Ramayana suffice for this? I’d hate to pick one up, only yo realize this isn’t the “flavor” of story I’m looking for, if that makes sense.
