A book that plays on several elements of fear, anticipation, and psychological trauma.
While in theory, the book has an interesting plot, enough to shake up the person reading it,
the ending was a little too convenient.
The book leaves a lot of questions unanswered such as – Why did Jack go to Thailand? Why did he want Millie so badly? Didn’t the police dust the paintings in the basement for prints? If yes they would’ve surely known that Grace painted them. Was Esther always suspicious of Jack?
However, it was an interesting read that I could not put down.
One key point that I noticed was how similar this book was to “The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden. I looked up and this book was released before the Housemaid.
The plot lines of abusive husband, who was was also once abused, secret basement that only locks from the outside, the jailer becomes the prisoner and finally a convenient way out of the murder in the end were all major overlaps between the two books!
If you’ve read both, or either of them, what did you think?
