I'm trying to get into more nonfiction books, so since forestry is my area of study and I've heard a lot of good about these authors, where should I start? After reading some reviews on Muir on Goodreads, I really can't decide what to read since some people seem to really like his early works and many also hate them, especially the ones that only contain diary entries. Or is it better to start with their essays, or retellings of their travels?

I admittedly haven’t read either of those two, but another great book with forestry as a theme (specifically forest fire) is Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean
Another great place to start is with the writing of John McPhee. Travels Through Georgia or The Control of Nature might be interesting to you, or any other of his nature-themed books. Braiding Sweetgrass is a great book about an indigenous perspective on ecology and science.
