I was looking for a new book and found a book that sounded excellent. The family experiment, it’s about a group of couples on a reality show who raise an AI baby, and the one who wins as decided by a live stream audience, gets the money to start a biological family. It’s an absolutely amazing concept.
And it fell so flat for me. There’s a mix of things, the main one being trying to put so many complex ideas in a relatively short novel, none of them ended up fleshed out enough. All the couples could’ve been so interesting but they were missing just enough to be just… too vague. I confused a lot of the couples at first because they didn’t have enough personality.
And for me that’s the main problem with his writing, the characters mean very little to the plot. They could be replaced with anyone and the story would be pretty much the same. In a story that could be so personal of couples trying desperately to start a family, I barely cared about anyone.
Also the disregard of the ai by the end was a choice.
I’d love to hear other perspectives though because most reviews I’ve read have been very positive.
