I read fantasy books sometimes but the majority of my reading is classics, especially Japanese, Russian and English classics. I love Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, the Brontë sisters, Yukio Mishima, Oscar Wilde, Chekhov etc. I recently find myself wanting to read romances after I played a well-written romance game and fell in love (no pun intended) but I'm not used to the romance genre. I'm fine with both contemporary and historical books but I'm particular about only reading things that are well-written and emotional. I'm not interested in smut. And I would honestly prefer it if it doesn't rely on tropes (I'd prefer to skip the whole bad boy/ good girl or my brother's best friend thing. I read fan fiction. I don't need to read novels that serve as fan fiction) or references to pop culture (like characters talking about Reddit or Taylor swift) but anything is excusable if the story is good enough and moves me.

I know this rules out a lot of contemporary romances but I hope I can get recommendations for romances that aren't just the average booktok or bookstagram favorite. Extra points for underrated books. Thank you!
