Need apocalypse book recommendations. Preferably zombie apocalypse, but I can do monster apocalypse too. I don't want EMP bursts, weather disasters, or earthquakes. I'm looking for total societal collapse and destruction. Zombies or something of the like. Hopefully, at the start of it all. I love stories that follow a small group of people and really focus on their humanity as they traverse the outbreak as it unfolds. I like people focused stories. I enjoy the blood and gore of it all too.

I'm really tired of the average Joe/Jane suddenly becomes a super elite fighter and can somehow take down countless dead or the oppressive group who have decided to take over the area now that the government has collapsed. I have stopped reading a few of those books because of that plot. I powered through a few of them too and wish I had just DNF'd instead.

I'm currently listening to Extinction Horizon by Nicholas S Smith & Cell by Stephen King. Also, hoping for the audiobook versions of any recommendations and for it to be available on Libby or Hoopla. I do have Audible, but I'm trying not to spend money if I don't have to.

Here are the books I have read

Day by Day Armageddon By JL Bourne (I have read the entire series; I LOVED the first two books. The rest were so-so.)

The Walking Dead novel series by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga. (I have read all 8 books and the short story. The first two were amazing, 3-5 were good, they rest were so-so.)

Until the End of the World by Sarah Lyons Fleming (I thought the book was good, it wasn't good enough for me to keep reading the series though.)

The Dead of Night series by Jonathon Maberry (Dark of Night was my favorite one. The rest were ok, probably an unpopular opinion, I didn't like Desdemona Fox.)

Red Hill & Among Monsters by Jamie McGuire (They were ok.)

The First Days by Rhiannon Frater (I didn't like this book, so I never continued with the series.)

The Girl with All the Gifts by MR Carey (This book was phenomenal. I do intend to read the second one.)

The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks (I love this book.)

World War Z by Max Brooks (Also a good read.)

100 Days in Deadland & Deadland's Harvest by Rachel Aukes (The first one was ok. Didn't like the second one and I didn't bother with the third one.)

Nights of the Living Dead: An Anthology by Jonathon Maberry (Most of the stories in there were good.)

Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry (Good book, not good enough for me to keep reading the series. Not what I'm looking for.)

Anna and the Apocalypse by Katharine Turner (It was funny and a decent read.)

These are not Zombie stories but still good

End of Summer by SM Anderson (Not good enough to read the whole Seasons of Man series though.)

The Road by Corman McCarthy (I do like this book, its not my favorite though.)

The Rule of Three by Adrian J Smith (It was good, but not good enough for me to keep reading the whole series.)

Solar Fury by EA Chance (I didn't like this book at all.)

    Books I DNF'd

Feed by Mira Grant (Not what I was looking for. I don't want to read about how the world survived.)

Mountain Man by Keith C Blackmore (I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion; I don't like RC Bray's voice. Maybe I will read the books one day instead of listening.)

The Dead South Series by Zach Bohannon (I couldn't get into it.)

The Dead series by TW Brown (Bought the All-Dead Omnibus on Audible. Those stories were not very good.)

There are a few more books I DNF'd, I just can't remember the names of all of them.
