Among popular travel writers, I really like the writing style of Colin Thubron (and Naipaul to a lesser extent, but not so much Theroux's style). However neither Thubron or Naipaul have much in the way of Southeast Asia. Can anyone suggest books based on the region – either Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines or Indonesia – that have great mix of historical and cultural insights but written in a lyrical prose that is almost poetic? Thanks in advance.
