I don't usually read books but that's the only thing I can stomach right now. I'm feeling really depressed and empty. I don't want something to make me happy or distract me, I want something that understands me. Something contemplative, maybe philosophical, something to punch me in the gut with a revelation. That could be too much to ask for, but I want to be comforted by a book that might speak to me.

Ah, well, I am not sure if you struggle with same things as me, but these are the four books that helped me most, and shaped my philosophy of life:
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Doestoevsky.
They are all about, directly or obliquely, choosing towards meaning, which helped me a lot. They are always what I recommend to depressed people, but might not be the best if you are looking for practical help.
Could be a good time to pick up Infinite Jest.
