I really enjoy immersive historical fiction, especially when the book is super meta and acknowledges in some way that it’s a bunch of words on a page being read by a person not living in the time period it takes place in. Bonus points for making some argument about historiography!
Tyll by David Kehlmann is probably my best example of this. I’m currently reading Mason and Dixon by Thomas Pynchon which is also brilliant, though it’s a very demanding book lol. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez and Democracy by Joan Didion loosely fit this vibe that I’m looking for. Any suggestions for me? 🙂
