Teens (mostly male) in juvenile detention center are requesting book suggestions. They are ages 14-16 but most read below grade level, probably 3rd-4th grade level at the most. I've been buying graphic novels for their library, but now they're ready to branch out a little. Especially interested in characters who are street savvy and racially diverse. Graphic sex, violence, explicit drug use are topics not allowed. These guys are not afraid of romance or sports but especially need books that speak to the more urban teen who's been through a lot but is still a kid at heart. Please help!

Not urban, but the Akimbo series by Alexander McCall Smith. The main character’s father is head ranger at an animal preserve in Africa. Lots of action.
