Have you ever completely stopped a book you were otherwise enjoying because the protagonist did something so breathtakingly stupid that you can't take it? I have many times. Bad decisions are one thing, everyone makes them sometimes, and you wouldn't have much of a story if everyone was perfectly wise and rational all the time. But I want to see how the decision seems rational and makes sense to them. It should have some kind of logic to it. But a character that suddenly does something completely irrational, that has obvious consequences they somehow ignore or don't think about, makes me cringe so hard I tend to stop reading altogether. The vicarious embarrassment and annoyance is too much.
