Crime/mystery/thriller where MC is not a cop or PI
Journalists, public health investigators, assurance investigators, just some regular folk who found themselves searching for the truth anything that's not cop/PI/spy
Blake Crouch’s last 3 books (Dark Matter, Recursion, Upgrade). Dark Matter especially!

You might look at the “Kate Turner, DVM” Mystery series by Eileen Brady. Pet lovers will especially enjoy them. Contemporary setting and relatable characters.
I recommend you search by author because she had to change the series name a bit when she changed publisher after I think book 4

Robert Langdon series. Angels and demons, davinci code, inferno….
There is a whole subgenre of thrillers called “domestic thrillers” that typically do not have police or investigators of any kind as a lead character.
Gone Girl is a domestic thriller. So is Girl On The Train, as well as anything by Mary Kubica, Megan Miranda, Ruth Ware, Robyn Harding, Michelle Campbell, the most recent books by Kellye Garrett and Rachell Howzell Hall, and literally dozens of others.
There are some great non-police thrillers out there.
