Please suggest me a psychological horror book that doesn't rely on comically sick or pitiful scenarios to instill fear or emotional traumatization; I'm talking about books like "A Child Called 'It'", or "120 Days of Sodom". I don't mind if it's apart of the story — I love Dostoevsky even though there are some pretty terrible scenes in his books — but I don't want it to be the main focus. To give a sense of what I'm looking for: there's some parts of Crime and Punishment that built tension which shook me whilst reading, The Beast in the Cave kept me clung throughout its short reading time, and for a film reference, J-Horror such as Kairo/Pulse works incredibly for me. I hope you can help.
