The Histories by Herodotus. Herodotus is often called the Father of History and this one is about the Greco-Persian Wars.

The Sumerians: Their History, Culture, and Character by Samuel Noah Kramer. About the Sumerian civilization which was one of the earliest complex societies in human history.

*The Intimate Universe* by Marek Kukula. Events take place well before 1500 CE & for that matter 1500 BCE. A favourite because it’s hugely intellectally stimulating & so well-written that a reader who has no relevant background whatsoever can understand the essential historic events Kukula treats.

*Rise and reign of the mammals* by Steve Brusatte

      *Kindred* by Rebecca Sykes

*The dawn of everything* by Davids Graeber and Wengrow

They’re my favorites because they are well written, well researched, fascinating histories that help me imagine what it was like to inhabit those times and places.
