I picked up Lonesome Dove recently after having heard great things about it for a few months. It's outside my usual genres, but I've been having a good time exploring outside my comfort zone recently. I know that I signed up for a bit of a slow book, but I have loved traditionally slow novels like Lord of the Rings; I can handle 3 full pages on the beauty of trees in a forest.

But most books pick up the pace at some point at least. I'm 20 chapters and about 200 pages in and I feel like the Hat Creek Company has been on the verge of doing something for the past 15 chapters, but every time they get close, it's a false start or false alarm.

My question is this: does the story pick up at all, or does it hold this pace for the rest of the story? The back of the book promises romance and adventure, but so far it's been dancing around both.
