i'm trying to improve my ability to write scenes like this, and as the old saying goes, if you want to improve your writing, read the kind of books you want to write.

now i do already read some books in genres like this of course, but i'm looking for some recommendations. i don't care if they are modern books or classics.

nor am i picky about plot, as i mostly want to read books for the purpose of getting better at writing scenes that have visceral descriptions of violence or horror, or that have a slightly surrealist/dreamlike but still vivid and disturbing tone to the writing in the way that they do it, if that makes any sense?

supernatural elements are preferred but optional since i'm mainly trying to learn how to write supernatural horror. i'm not looking for books that are straight up gore-porn where it's clearly just the author reveling in it as far as my taste in books goes, but if there are books in that category (i think i've heard the term 'splatterpunk' thrown around related?) i would read them just to see how those scenes are handled even if i don't want this to be the entire focus of my writing, it's just an important element in my stories that needs major improvement.

if anyone has any recs, feel free to throw them at me. thank you.
