How do you reckon one gets into classics? There are many out there that are of various degree of complexities and would like to know a good text that is intriguing as well as fairly easy to get through.

I've been told to pick up "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde to start with. What do ya think?

That’s a great place to start. I’d also recommend Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.
