Those sorts of topics don’t traumatize me, my brain enjoys taboo in fiction. ‘Whispers and the Roars’ was probably one of my favorite books I read in 2023, and it deals with a difficult subject firsthand in a profound and fascinating way (no spoilers from me, it kind of ruins it 😉 )

But books like ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ fucked me up for days. Emotional trauma, grief, etc. NOPE. The older I get, the less I enjoy them.

‘Winter Birds’ by Jim Grimsley. His work is pretty messed up in general but that shit was next-level.

    3. This one messed me up for a couple of weeks, mostly because it’s nonfiction/true. Humans are a messed up species, my random internet friend.

      Adam Hochschild’s *King Leopold’s Ghost*

Lolita did, mostly because I was a teenager and kept forgetting that it’s an old dude describing a very young girl. I had a different image in my head but I would read, get excited, remember I’m reading about a little girl and not another teenager my age, and then be disgusted. I didn’t finish it.

How Long ‘Til Black Future month as well. Not traumatizing so much as it was just… fucking heavy. At one point I just cried for a time, and put it down knowing I needed to have a recovery period before I picked it up again. It ultimately took me a year or so to finish it.
