There was this book I read long ago with a mute, I think, character that kept his hands in his pockets

I think it was a Steinbeck book, not sure. He may or may not have been mute, or potentially he was a fake mute. He kept his hands in his pockets because otherwise they would say too much, and he was shy. What was this book?
