Severance Package by Duane Swierczynski comes to mind although I’d argue it largely achieves what it sets out to do.

The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay was a genuine disappointment despite the initially compelling scenario it sets up.

Try to avoid spoilers if you can!

      Preparing myself for the downvotes…

      – The Goldfinch (Donna Tartt). It’s technically well written, but I hate this book more than I have ever hated any book. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.

      – The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (Stuart Turton). Really cool concept, but I felt underwhelmed when I finished the book.

I felt this way about Ascension by Nicholas Binge. A mountain taller than Everest suddenly appears in the middle of the Pacific with no explanation and a team of scientists are sent to investigate. Intriguing, right? And yet everything that came after was somehow soooo silly and un compelling at the same time.

I totally agree on cabin at the end of the world, definitely thought it was just me!
