It’s my turn to choose and I feel the pressure. Lately we’ve been reading a lot of non-fiction, memoirs, and just heavy topics so I really want to select something that’s a bit more fun. Just a true, hearty fiction novel with a good story. I personally love mystery/thrillers or something with an unexpected plot twist. I really just want one of those books that you don’t want to put down because you have to see what’s going to happen next.

So far I was thinking of Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn or The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Zafon as I saw them both recommended in this subreddit. Any opinions on those as book club picks? Or anyone have some recommendations that fit the bill?

    1. I’ve read Sharp Objects and thought it was fantastic. There would definitely be a lot to discuss as it’s very pacey and fun to read but also heavy on theme and character. Just be aware that it contains some graphic and adult content that’s pretty central to the plot, so if you want to take a break from “heavy” books then it might not be the best pick right now.

Some alternatives that are more lighthearted might be {{The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery}}, {{Piranesi by Susanna Clarke}}, or (my personal favorite) {{Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier}}.

One of my personal favorite mystery/thriller books is The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager. But I also agree that The Shadow of the Wind would be good!

I don’t know your picks, but if you feel they are the right ones and it would fit the group, go for it.

Otherwise: *The Man Who Was Thursday* by G. K. Chesterton.

A short read, lots of witty word play, very vivid imagination, a philosophical mystery novel with strong comedy elements cast about. Guaranteed to create lots of interesting conversation.

    4. Have you read the Strike detective series by Robert Galbraith yet? It has a total of 7 books now and most of them are real page turners
