    Hi! Self explanatory title. My daughter loves reading and reads "modern" chapter books with simpler vocabulary on her own. (She loves Princess in Black, Heidi Heckelback, Critter Club, and reads these independently.)

    For read aloud bedtime stories with me, I am looking for slightly more challenging text. She LOVED Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and we immediately read the sequel (Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator) which she (and I) didn't enjoy as much. We are now going through Charlotte's Web, and although we are almost done – I didn't see the spark in her eyes that I saw with the magic of Willy Wonka.

    Any other chapter books to recommend? I am looking for something more "classic" with well-written prose (vs. the very casual tone of the modern book serieses), but not something too "old fashioned", which I think may be a bit dry and boring for her/me.

    Thanks!

      If she enjoyed Roald Dahl, try the BFG or Mathilda. I also loved The Secret Garden. The Phantom Tollbooth is another classic. Amelia Bedelia is fun, and they are shorter.

      The books of Edward Eager are delightful books about how magic can go wonky. The first one I read was {{ Half Magic by Edward Eager }}

      Also recommend Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books, though they are short stories not chapters.

      It’s not quite old enough to be called a classic, but my 6-year-old niece loved The Enchanted Forest Chronicles series as a read-aloud. There are 4 books total, first book is “Dealing With Dragons.” They have a plucky unconventional princess, a sensible witch, talking dragons, badly behaved wizards, and subvert fairytale tropes in funny and clever ways. I think they would appeal to any kid who enjoyed the Princess in Black books.
