I'm looking for books that through their descriptions, dialogue, and characterization, create a "world," like a mini earth with all its good and evils and webs of characters who bounce off each other and stick with you long after you're done reading. I don't specifically mean a whole new fantasy setting, (though I'm not adverse to a fantasy rec), but instead a distinct atmosphere with gripping character dynamics. Examples of books I think that fall under this category include East of Eden and Brothers Karamazov. I've been having a hard time finding anything similar to those, since they are obviously one of a kind books. Also I would prefer standalones bc I don't want to commit to any more huge series lol.
