I read reviews to find out why someone liked, or disliked a book. If I want to read about the author‘s politics, or about a thoughtless joke they once made, I can do it for myself. When people use a review to attack an author, rather than the book, I feel patronised, and angry. It sounds like:
“You little people aren’t able to think for yourselves, so I’m going to spoon-feed you some information and ideas“.
It has no effect whatsoever on whether I end up getting the book. In fact, if anything, it makes me keep reading more reviews to see if there’s a reason why I might like the book. I really wish I could tick a box to stop seeing the reviews of some people.
I don’t doubt this has been said a lot, but I seem to be coming across a lot of pompous, arrogant people this week, so I felt like a rant.

🙂 Kurt Vonnegut said some very good things about the *work* of nazi sympathizer Céline. so you’re in good company.
