I've been on a fantasy kick lately, but it seems like every book has the typical story. A sympathetic protagonist who has some sort of disadvantage who through the events of the narrative and discussions with other characters, self actualizes and takes down the big bad or otherwise solves the overarching problem. I know nearly all books take that approach because it's the most popular and traditional way to tell a story, but I'm looking for something that breaks some or all of the traditional narrative rules. Maybe the bad guy wins. Maybe it's told from the perspective of the bad guy. Maybe it's non-linear. I just want to read something that's as trope-free as possible.
