Hi, this is my first post here and I just had wanted to ask those who have read the crucible for their input. I just finished the book for my AP Lang class and enjoyed a lot of it. For the required reading we must discuss a theme and explain. One of the standout ones for me was through the mention of birds in the trial and how Proctor was compared to one. To me it showed redemption and freeing oneself from guilt and consequence. Proctor sacrificed himself but in the end prevented anyone else from being accused and saw his own goodness, as said by Elizabeth he is the highest judge of his character. Ultimately freeing him from his guilt and self hated (getting Elizabeth’s forgiveness as well), and technically being free of the town and the theocracy. Also seen through Abby and how because of Mary and Proctor’s trial (yellow bird swooping down) she freed herself from all ties to Salem without facing any consequences (at least from the town). Comparing how both of these characters were freed at the end but in very different ways, Abby forced the blame on others while rejecting all of the tainted parts of herself while Proctor faced every part of his character. It would be interesting to see Hale mentioned in this too and his own view of self forgiveness. Bringing the question: Is Abby really free? Overall, I see the theme as the importance of self judgement and forgiveness as true forms of redemption/ measure of one’s goodness. I would love to hear other thoughts on the themes in the Crucible and also if you agree or disagree with mine. Thanks!
