    SPOILERS!!

I finished it and am thoroughly confused. What are your thoughts about the ending? I thought it was bittersweet but was surprised Hud Hudson would get the treatment. What even is the treatment? Is it plastic surgery? Why does it leave people with fragmented memories? I’d love to hear your interpretations on the ending and the relationship between Belle and her mother. I was surprisingly touched by the mother and daughter jellyfish scene but still confused what it all meant lol.

    1. I interpreted the treatment as some sort of soul removal. I think the jellyfish were the souls of those who received the treatment. The person is just left as a shell, hence the memory loss.

I’m thoroughly confused in a whole different way. Who was Seth? A real person? He makes sense to me as either imaginary-Tom-Cruise-bad-memory-guy OR as some future-Rouge-member-trauma-scout, but not both. A real life friend of Mother’s that manifested in the 10 year old’s psychosis maybe? Is that the in?

Oh I absolutely loved it, just like I adored both of Mona Awad’s previous novels. Her books give me that surrealist, Lynchian fever dream feeling that I don’t often get from reading. Beauty dystopian is also having a moment right now, so this was a great one to read after Ling Ling Huang’s Natural Beauty.

I loooved it. It’s a very interesting take on grief, trauma, and the beauty industry
