I recently read When the Moon Hatched and ACOTAR and was disappointed – I need actual smart characters! I loved Outlander, pretty much every Brandon Sanderson book, Project Hail Mary, The Martian, Good Omens, The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic. I read a lot of Romantacy, but I encounter pretty much the same issue with every story – the main characters act like they're 14. I just want a book where the adults behave like adults and discuss their problems instead of expecting the other characters to just know what's wrong and getting mad when they don't lol any recs? Bonus points if female main characters.

I feel like a broken record constantly recommending this, but I loved “The Familiar” by Leigh Bardugo, which is historical fantasy set during the Spanish Inquisition with a romance sub-plot. The characters are young adults but aren’t vapid and immature.
