I’m looking for good psychological novels that will make me insane enough to distract me, preferably not spicy, or maybe with an asexual-leaning main character. I love a good book to chew on that makes you think, so those are welcome here too. I like crime procedurals and historical fiction the best, and I do not like fantasy or young adult. My favorite books are The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, A Good Kill by John McMahon, and Leaving Time by Jodi Piccoult. Thank you!

*Fever Dream* by Samanta Schweblin has an odd, circuitous narrative that genuinely does kind of feel like a fever dream. It’s not very long—I read it one sitting.
Any of Franz Kafka’s work but especially *The Trial* and *Metamorphosis*.
*The Yellow Wallpaper* by Charlotte Perkins Gilmore is brief but memorable.
Sylvia Plath’s *The Bell Jar* deals heavily with depression—absolutely worth a read even if it’s a little outside the crazy
You also may like some of Chuck Palahniuk’s work. It’s been about 15 years since I read any of them but I don’t remember *Survivor* or *Invisible Monsters* to be notably 🌶️🌶️🌶️ but if someone’s read it more recently please feel free to correct me.
If you haven’t read Camus’s *The Stranger* I recommend it. There’s a book called *The Blind Owl* by Sadegh Hedayat that has kind of a similar vibe but it’s much less linear and tends to layer on itself.
