I'm going to list some of my favourite science fiction stories and themes and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I have not read a lot of scifi but there are some themes I have started to really enjoy.

Frankenstein – one of my favourite books across all genres.

Do androids dream of electric sheep – Philip K. Dick

The three stigmata of palmer eldritch – Philip K. DIck

Frozen Journey (short story) – Philip K. Dick

VALIS – Philip K. Dick (you could make a really strong case that this book isn't very good, but I love it considering the life of the author and how it lets you peer into his mind)

The Time Machine – H.G Wells

A Canticle For Leibowitz – Walter M. Miller Jr. (I am not a religious person but I love the religious imagery and symbolism in the book, I just love how this book is written, it is hard to explain)

I have no mouth and I must scream – Harlan Ellison

    All Tomorrows – C.M. Kosemen

Neuromancer – William Gibson (I actually was not a big fan of the story itself, but the prose and imagery is just written so beautifully)

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what it is that I am looking for, I am hoping that some scifi fans out there will get the gist of what I enjoy based on these stories. I really enjoy books like with Philip K. Dick that toy with what is real and what isn't, have an unreliable narrator, or in the case of electric sheep, what is consciousness. Philip K. Dick gives an almost psychedelic stream of consciousness and I absolutely can't get enough of that. I love the speculative and dark nature of all tomorrows and the time machine. I love Frankenstein and canticle because it makes you question things like inevitability, the actions of man and society and is generally just poetic and emotional. Not all of these books are the exact same in their themes or purpose but if there are any books that you think scream out to be apart of this list, please let me know, because I would love to give them a chance.

    1. Chocky by John Wyndham sort of explores what is “real” if you consider it from the parents’ perspective, not your typical sci-fi

Double Star by Heinlein is another one

Also the Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell – keep reading til the end if you want to question everything
