Out of college, as a blue collar state school boy in DC amongst alumni of prestigious institutions, I felt like I had catch up and hit the books. Yes, I felt inadequate and whether that was warranted is a conversation for another day. Anyhow, I made my way through the ancient world, Russia, England, France… you know where I'm going with this, all of the classics and "best books ever written".

With the recently published New York Times Best Books of the 21st Century, I found myself reading through the list knowing and having read very few of the books and authors on the list. Now the low hanging fruit would be to just start reading through the list starting at 1. The other low hanging fruit would be to read the selections which I happen to own (I have also read and own a bunch of nonfiction selections, but I'm more concerned with literature at the moment).

However, I'd like to hear other people's opinion on where to begin as well as where to acquaint myself with the authors' works and analyses of their works.

From the NYT list, I have read:

    • The Road

From the NYT list, I own but have not read:

    • The Overstory
    • Trust
    • A Visit from the Goon Squad
    • The Plot Against America
    • When We Cease to Understand the World

    Where to next?
